Yes, we're back. The break was not a bad thing, but it's time to pick up and go again.
Speaking of breaks, they abound today.
We're getting a welcome break from the heat, for one ... today's featured artist frequently takes a break from being clothed.
Rodger Kent Van Dusseldorp (who usually goes by his middle name) is one of the area's most sought-after male figure models, for photographers, painters and life drawers alike. So it's fitting that his own work should also focus on the human form.
Au Naturel, which closes today with a reception from noon to 4 p.m. at VALA Gallery in Mission, includes not only Van Dusseldorp's work, but images others have drawn or painted of him from the gallery's Sunday modeling sessions.
His own work includes both photos and figure drawings — and while there are images of plants, flowers, insects and the like interspersed into the show, many of the photographs are self-shots of Van Dusseldorp wearing nothing but the skin he was born in.
Clearly, he isn't shy. (There's a reason the gallery's front windows have been covered for the month, let's put it that way.) But his breezy attitude toward his own exposure is a welcome ... say it with me ... break from the "OMG NUDITY!!!!!" extremes, both pro and con. He's obviously serious about taking care of his body, and how he presents it, but there's a lighthearted element running through the photos (one of which features a well-placed Peace sign) which keeps things from turning self-reverential rather than self-referential.
There's a serious point to be made here as well. For all the appreciation of the female nude, male full frontalism does tend to draw more askance glances, and this show is a straightforward, if good-natured, confrontation of that outlook.
But wait ... there's another dimension to the show. For the first time, Van Dusseldorp is showing his own drawings (also done during the VALA sessions).
As the work above shows, his style is quick and direct, focusing less on identity than on basic lines and shapes. The drawings are raw, but still show a deep awareness of the body and its structures.
This being a break from the workweek, and the last day of the show, it's a good time to get out of the house and catch not some rays, but some skin.
